Last orders on the tube
Since the announcement by the Mayor Boris Johnson that alcohol will be banned on London transport tomorrow 1st June there have been calls for last orders on the tube. Apparently a Facebook group - 'London Undergrounds Last ever party' with thousands of members is planning an event on the Circle line from 9 pm tonight. Other groups claim they were going to start from mid-day today.
A bit irresponsible considering the way some people behave whilst intoxicated. Thought it a bit of a wind up until I set out on the Northern line to visit my grandchildren. Mid morning there were several people already drinking beer. One reveller even tore off the picture of a gremlin from one of the carriage advertisements and was making a right nuisance of himself.
On the following overland train there was no such incident.
With the thought of possible trouble in the back of my mind, decided not to wait for dinner and came back a little earlier than expected. From London Bridge couldn't believe that many of the young men were openly drinking Fosters in the tube carriage. They were only making a noise not harassing other passengers but the smell of beer was sickening. In fact one of the young men gave me his seat, something that doesn't happen often these days.
With extra police being drafted in, we will have to wait and see if there is any trouble tonight. There are reports that there will also be a booze-up on the Underground tomorrow in defiance of a new public transport ban on alcohol. What is surprising is that it's a Saturday night and there aren't the usual crowds exiting the station down the road - the local haunts are very quiet. Seems many people are trying to keep away from any trouble.
