Boris bans alcohol on the tube

Good news indeed.

Newly-elected London mayor Boris Johnson has gone straight into attack mode and carried out his election pledge to ban boozing from London's public transport system - from 1 June the drinking of alcohol will be banned from the Tube, tram, bus, and Docklands Light Railway. The BBC reports.

The blonde Tory bombshell declared: "I firmly believe that if we drive out so-called minor crime then we will be able to get a firm grip on more serious crime".

All I can say is that's just great. Good on you Boris. It's so horrible to have to sit with the lager louts drinking on the tube. The smell is bad enough but it fuels shouting and bad behaviour. Very unnerving

Folks are asking how they will enforce it. Don't think it will be a problem, people will snitch on drinkers I'm quite sure about that. Most people hate it as much as I do. There's already continual announcements about not smoking over the loud speakers at all stations so now we can expect it to include alcohol.

Although of course, the ban misses the point. An otherwise sober person having a can of larger would be caught, but a completely legless lout abusing other passengers would not . . . it's gesture politics, pure and simple

I have never really seen this as a problem on the tube, perhaps on the buses. But it does seem like a policy cooked up by people who actually don't use public transport all that often. there is nothing on enforceability - kind of like saying that a borough will be a 20mph zone just with signs!
Ultimately, it will probably been seen to work because it wasn;t a problem in the first place.

You're spot on, Anthony. A quick announcement that will cost nothing but conveys the appearance of doing something. I wonder how many tube staff will feel comfortable enforcing it?

Good to see Boris's early actions as Mayor are already ending in disaster (see last nights carnage on the tubes) If you ask me not allowing a drunk person alcohol while there traveling is going to make them more frustrated and aggressive than if they did have a a drink. I can only imagine it will lead to more and more people getting more drunk before they go out than they would if they were allowed to drink on public transport which will end in more fights and violence in the streets. Something like this obviously sounds good to people (ive yet to meet any yet though) but not the slightest bit of thought has been put into the after effects. Boris is simply an idiot who has probably never et foot upon a tube in his life.
